John was born and raised in Mali Losinj, Croatia. His family left their homeland spending time in refugee camps in Italy before settling in the United States in 1964. They resided in Newark and Irvington before settling in Boonton 38 years ago. After graduating from Weequahic High School, John attended Montclair State University (1972) where he was a star striker on the men's soccer team. He was a teacher and coach in Newark for several years before moving to the restaurant industry, where he served as a bartender and manager at Chessman Bistro, Harlequin Cafe, and most recently, Cafe NaVona in Rockaway. Other than the endless love for his family, his passion was the game of soccer - whether it be as a player, coach, or spectator. John has impacted the lives of many people, whether it was behind the bar or on the sidelines of the field. A deeply religious man, he was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Boonton and St. Peters in Parsippany. John was the beloved husband of Aida (nee Campanha) Lukin for 35 years; devoted father to Marko and his wife Meghan and Kristina Koch and her husband Robert; loving brother to Marinko Lukin and Tereza Rogic; adored uncle to many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Petrica Lukin, and his sister Anamarija Lukin.
