Louis "Lou" Mangano, 84

Louis “Lou” Mangano, 84, of Montville, formerly from Elmwood Park, passed away peacefully at home on August 12th. By his side was his loving wife of 60 years, Arlene Mangano (nee Triolo), his loving children Kenneth and daughter in-law Anna, daughter Eileen, son Louis and daughter in-law Karen, and son Michael. His legacy will be carried on through his cherished grandchildren Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Marco, and Isabella Mangano. He was predeceased by his parents, Salvatore, and Mary Mangano of Elmwood Park. He leaves behind his sister Maryann and brother in-law David Haas, brother in-law Frank Triolo and his wife Paula. He was a respected uncle, cousin, and friend. He loved his five German Shepherds, New York football Giants, New York Yankees, and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Lou’s accomplishments are many, highlighted by several decades of personal and professional successes demonstrated by his commitment to his profession and love of the Elmwood Park Crusader red and white. He served his country as a medic in the US Army before joining the East Paterson Police Department from 1966 to 1983 retiring as a Detective. During his police career he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University in 1970. He continued his studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he obtained a Master of Arts in criminal justice in 1973 impressively completing a thesis for his degree. He returned to Seton Hall University earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence upon graduating in 1979 and began his own private practice specializing in criminal, matrimonial, and real estate law. In 1996, he appeared before the Supreme Court of New Jersey winning a landmark case. He enjoyed sharing his experiences and knowledge which led to a teaching career as an adjunct professor at both Farleigh Dickinson University and Jersey City State College. He was an assistant and adjunct professor at William Paterson College from 1980 through 1986.

Lou’s commitment to his hometown of Elmwood Park culminated in his induction into the Elmwood Park Hall of Fame in 2019. Along with his lifetime best friend, Joseph Castiglia, they were part of a team that started the East Paterson wrestling club in 1959. During the 1980’s he announced football games and was a committee member acting as MC of the first Hall of Fame dinners. His dedication to the township saw him elected to the Elmwood Park Board of Education, acting as President on two separate occasions. In addition, he served as borough attorney from 2005 through 2007. After 40 years of practice, he retired spending his final years at home with his family and friends.

A private, family ceremony will be held at Dangler, Lewis and Carey funeral home in Boonton, NJ.
