Obituary of Lucille Loretta Scerbo

Please share a memory of Lucille to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lucille L. Scerbo

Lucille L Scerbo died, as she hoped, at the home she came to as a bride in April 1951. Born in November of 1927, she was the seventh child of Charles F. and Catherine Julia (Dunn) Hopkins. Except for her first two years in Jersey City, Boonton was her Home Town.

Lucille was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish - as a Catholic Daughter, Rosary Society member, Eucharistic Minister and Teacher of Fourth Grade, Catechism and Gym. (She began the Gym program at the elementary school during the fitness phase of the 1960s.) Later, when her girls were grown she was involved with the Dominican Associates of Caldwell.

She was a faithful friend, a loving and well-loved aunt to 32 nieces and nephews and their families, an enthusiastic mother (to more than her own daughters.) She was a Girl Scout Leader and a fundraiser for various causes. Cille was the supportive wife of Al Scerbo, who was involved in Boonton and Morris County politics over a thirty year span. Some of the best memories (and there were many) of that time included the Boonton Centennial in 1967 when Al was Mayor. Their pride of town and love of community, always a huge part of their lives, was especially evident.

Cille had an uninhibited laugh and was always ready to encourage everyone to have a good time (there is even a photo of her standing on a table dressed for a party, doing just that.) She had “fans” among multiple generations.

Lucille was predeceased by her husband Alfonse and daughter Anni, all seven of her siblings and their spouses, and her Scerbo in-laws with the exception of Louise Carter who now lives in Florida. She is survived by her daughter Kitty/Catherine Waitt (Douglas), granddaughter Iris, and daughter Maria Bermudez, as well as Hopkins and Scerbo nieces and nephews.

The Rosary will be said at 9:30 AM on Wednesday at Dangler Lewis & Carey Funeral Home, 312 West Main St. prior to the Funeral Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church of Boonton on Wednesday April 3 at 10:30 followed by a remembrance repast.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to: Mount Carmel School, Boonton Kiwanis Club, Boonton Area Cultural Arts-  for Concerts in The Park, or Save the Children (P.O. Box 97132 Washington, DC).
