Joan Neysa Kuhn Obituary

Joan Neysa Kuhn (née Van Dyke), 94, of Boonton, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026.

Joan was born on March 8, 1931, in San Diego, California. At a young age, she moved from California to Brooklyn, New York, where she attended Erasmus High School. After the passing of her mother, Joan moved to Staten Island to live with her Aunt Ruth, Uncle Jack Johnston, and their family. She graduated from Curtis High School in 1950. Inspired by a calling to care for others, Joan pursued a career in nursing. She received a full scholarship from St. Marks United Methodist Church in Brooklyn to attend Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Nursing School, graduating as a registered nurse in 1953.

Although she had considered joining the Navy, Joan met Walter Kuhn at a friend’s wedding, and they were married in 1956. Joan and Walter made Boonton their permanent home and together raised two children: John, born in 1959, and Doris, born in 1968.

Joan dedicated her entire career to nursing, serving at Methodist Hospital, Riverside Hospital, Saint Clare’s Hospital, and retiring from Tally Ho/Sarah Francis Nursing Home. She worked in ICU, CCU, telemetry, and geriatrics, providing skilled and compassionate care to countless patients. Her professionalism, dedication, and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Outside of work, Joan loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking for family, friends, church gatherings, and those in need. She had a sweet tooth and delighted in lollipops, oatmeal cookies, ice cream, apple pie, and licorice. Joan enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles, listening to Christian music and talk radio, and watching talk shows such as The View and Live with Kelly and Mark, as well as classic films on Turner Classic Movies. She was an active member of The Reformed Church of Boonton and later The Montville Reformed Church, and she also enjoyed socializing through the Senior Citizen Clubs of Boonton and Montville.

As a longtime resident of Boonton for nearly 70 years, Joan built a life centered around family, friends, service, and compassion. She will be remembered for her dedication to nursing, her quiet strength, and her warm, loving home.

Joan is survived by her children, John Kuhn (Nancy) of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Doris Yanez (Juan) of Boonton, NJ; her grandchildren, John, Claudia, and Jeffrey Yanez, and Stefani Kuhn; her beloved pets, Boots, Skylie, and Lucky; and many loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Estelle (née Larsen) and Richard Van Dyke; her half-brother, George Tompkins; and her devoted husband, Walter Kuhn.

Visitation will be held at Dangler, Lewis & Carey Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 11, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Christian service on Thursday, February 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montville Reformed Church (9 Church Ln, Montville, NJ 07045) or Northstar Pet Rescue in Boonton (187 Plane St, Boonton, NJ 07005).
