Margaret Anne “Peggy” Carey, 89 of Boonton NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday December 9, 2025, after a long and brave battle with dementia.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 910 Birch Street in Boonton, beginning at 10:00 with internment immediately following the mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Green Street, Boonton.
Visitation will be on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Dangler Lewis and Carey Funeral Home, 312 West Main Street, also in Boonton NJ from 2pm to 5pm.
Born in Jersey City NJ on October 22, 1936, Peggy was the beloved daughter of John and Anna (Mallon) Kiernan. She spent her early years in Jersey City before her family settled in Parsippany Troy Hills. She grew up with her cherished siblings Audrey Barnish of Boonton and John Kiernan of Lake Parsippany. Peggy graduated from Boonton High School, where she made lifelong friends and began shaping the warm, spirited woman she would become.
It was during these formative years at Boonton High did she meet the love of her life, Robert Arthur Carey. Their relationship blossomed into a devoted marriage that became the foundation of a beautiful family and a lifetime of shared memories. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Peggy is survived by her sister, Audrey Barnish, who was her fiercest advocate, her children, Robert “Bob” Carey and his wife Jackie of Lake Lure, NC, Daniel Carey and his wife Sharon of Boonton, Deborah Stroud and her husband Tracy of Talbott, TN and our brother from another mother, David Cunningham and his wife Joy of Blairstown, NJ, nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Peggy ran the household during the school years and was one of the original Green Street Neighborhood Watch Moms, making sure we remained under control and respectful to all and then rejoined the workforce, where she was the Assistant to the Parsippany School Board Administrator for many years until she retired. She was a fifty-year member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters chapter at Mount Carmel. Mom greatly enjoyed shopping for a good deal, ceramics, reading thousands of books, or perhaps just buying them, knitting, traveling and dropping everything to dote on her family or help a friend in need.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dementia Society of America, PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901, The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th floor, NY, NY 10001 or your local food pantry in Peggy’s honor.
