Obituary of Michael E. Mazzei
Michael E. Mazzei
July 16, 1946 – February 16, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael E. Mazzei, age 78, on February 16, 2025. Born on Staten Island, NY, Michael was a loving husband and father, dedicated professional, and passionate SCUBA diver whose legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Michael attended Wagner College, where he earned a BS in Chemistry and played as a defensive cornerback on their collegiate football team. After college, he married and moved to New Jersey, where he raised three daughters: Kimberly, Melissa, and Sarah. While his early career as a chemist was fulfilling, Michael’s true passion was always tied to the ocean. He became a dive master and opened his own SCUBA shop, where he certified hundreds of divers, sharing his love for the underwater world with others.
Michael’s connection to SCUBA diving extended into commercial diving, where he became a proud member of the Dock Builders Union Local 1465. He had the distinction of working on significant projects, including the fortification of the World Trade Center towers and participating in the clean-up efforts at Ground Zero after the tragic events of 9/11. His dedication to his craft and his community left an indelible mark on those who worked alongside him.
Known affectionately as "Diver Mike", he formed lifelong friendships through his work in the SCUBA diving community, and his name is still recognized among divers today. Michael also enjoyed being a novice videographer, capturing the beauty and mystery of the underwater world in a collection of films that brought joy to all who watched them.
Michael is survived by his two daughters, Kim Mazzei and Sarah Gueltzow. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Michael’s name to Oceana.
